Just take a look at this “Tribute to Bob Buford.” I didn’t watch them all, but fast forwarded to Bill Hybels (20 minutes). He uses the account of the “Rich Young Ruler” to make a point. The point I hear (and even my 9 year old picked up on it without my help) is that Bill Hybels thinks he could have “done it better” than Christ with the rich young ruler. To some it might be subtle, but to me it is obvious and quite disturbing.
Oh, and as a bonus at the end of the clip, my daughter noted “Look, all those books and no bibles.”
Your right on ChristianLady with your post.
They think that they could do better than Jesus in dealing with this rich young ruler.
I a heard sermon on the rich young ruler, and the main point was that he was saved but is missing out on all the blessings that Jesus wanted to give to him.
How sad.
Wow! I hate when people twist scripture so much! It’s used as a means to another end. People might have a “noble” motive in trying to get others motivated to serve or to witness, but it is never okay to twist scripture. I see it everywhere! People make the bible into a cliche, often times. One example that makes me crazy is when people say, “God will not give you more than you can handle…” Really? Well, how about death? Can we really handle death? Can we handle watching our children die? Can we handle persecution? No. God can handle these things, but we cannot. He will never give us more than HE can handle and he makes us capable of more than we can imagine in him, but only if he wills it. I just hate psychological Christian scripture twisting, or make nicer twisting.
God WILL give us more than we can handle if that’s what it takes to say, “I GIVE UP! I Cannot do this on my own anymore God! By your grace I need you to do it for me!” That’s living living the Christ life.
Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who lives but Christ who lives within me! And the life I now live I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me.
Thanks for posting this. I was doing some research trying to find out about Bill Buford and Leadership Network. There are some critical doctrines that Pastor Hybles violated here. First, Hybles states that “everyone”, including Jesus, failed when the rich young ruler did not take His “offer.” There are to many theological problems with that statement to deal with in this short comment. Second, Hybles states that he and Budford could do better than Jesus! Based on this heretical beleif, they started a foundation/training program for modern day “rich young rulers.” As a result, supposedly, millions have been blessed. The problem is, Hybles’ and Budford’s program never asked , and Willow Creek still never asks “rich young rulers” that come to their conferences to “sell everything” as Jesus commanded. I’ve been to a Willow Creek Leadership Submit (I’m not rich, I’m a missionary to Asia). We stayed at the Radission, ate great food at Willow Creek and around town and enjoyed the sites of Chicago. At no time was I ever promoted to sell anything, instead I was encouraged to bye their Willow Creek Resource crap and bye their Willow Creek Starbucks coffee. The topic of sacrifice was never addressed. There is much more to be said on this video, but I will leave it at that.
Just not lest you be judged.
I am shocked at how petty and self cetered you have become here.
My suggestion is that you pray to find ways to lift up Christ not tear down followers. You serve only evil with with wicked words.
We are told to test the spirits. I am being a berean in this case and testing the teachings not tearing down the person. Nice try though.
