“Spiritual discernment requires desire, prayer, learning from the gifted and mature, dependence on the Holy Spirit, and a diligent study of God’s Word. If you follow those steps, you will strengthen your doctrinal convictions, think antithetically, be kept from worldly approaches, be a good interpreter of God’s Word, and confront sin. All that will help you mature and bring honor to God!”
Once again, John nails it…
However, he (and others who stand for Biblical Truth and reject New Age methods of reaching people) are now considered out of the mainstream. Who could ever imaging such a thing; yet, that is the age we live in. God help us!
Those giftedness surveys can show some things about a person, but I think discernment is not correctly defined. I would have to look back and see. I really dislike the psychological tests used in the Christian circles. I do enjoy them initially, it’s interesting to look at, but don’t think they really show what God wants us to understand of the gifts he gives each person. Really, I noticed the gifts changed over time according to those surveys. I believe God prepares us for the events upcoming in our lives, and so he may need us to have a heart for hospitality at one time in our lives, and a need for discernment in other times. Walking around thinking, “I have the gift of hospitality” can be dangerous when we choose not to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit or a command from God’s word when we think we’re not gifted in this other area.
