I was on the steering committee of MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) in it’s founding year at our old church about six years ago. I recall being frustrated with the idea that speakers should not mention the Bible often, that talks should not be “preachy.” I expressed concern about this, and was told women who came to MOPS might not be Christians so we don’t want to drive them away. Even though I saw the point to a certain extent, I did not like the policy. The elder woman who spoke often would inevitably share Christ though she always had to tame things down a notch. She had been a strong Christian all her life, so it just came out no matter what she did. Now, if you write for MOPS, their webpage warns to write things from a “biblical but not doctrinal perspective.” “Please avoid Christian jargon and use biblical quotes sparingly.” To me, this is a dead giveaway that MOPS, though it would seem to be a Christian organization, actually is an organization with some Christian beginnings, and some Christian themes…but it’s not actually Christian. It’s trying to get away from Christ as the center just like many other churches and organizations are now doing.

IMHO any organization that calls itself Christian and attempts to water down the gospel in any way is indeed questionable.
“Please avoid Christian jargon and use biblical quotes sparingly;” this is a perfect description of the Seeker Sensitive movement which concentrates more on packing the pews than it does on conversion and making disciples.
I don’t believe the Gospel message is being watered down by MOPS, but I do believe in presenting the Good News in language that non-churched people can understand (like Philip and the Eunuch in NT) and so be able to respond to. A Biblical principle remains so, whether a Bible reference/verse is given or not.
I have a brother who is an aeronautical maintenance engineer. Now if you know someone “INTO” planes – it’s never just a wing on a plane or an engine. It is a something shaped so many inches aerosomething wing. Or a doodah sized somuch capacity turbine something engine. They speak with such passion and animation, except they speak in an alphabet soup language that a bunny like me hasn’t a hope of understanding.
Maybe the way your area/leader interprets the MOPS line is different to me. I (personally) do not try to hide MOPS Christian beginnings, present, and future. But being accessible in what I say and do – and building bridges of understanding – is the key.
Blessings on you and your MOPS group – that you all can show God’s love in your own unique way,
Johanna
PS: not sure if this got through yesterday as my computer canned out.
I do know the eunich was shown the truth through the scriptures. On the web page it appears MOPS doesn’t want too much scripture or doctrine in it’s writings. I would say there is an attempt to water things down. I know the local MOPS didn’t just try to give a principle that non-churched could understand, it was about not being offensive to them. I find that to be sad. The Gospel is offensive to many, and it is not something to act ashamed of…
